Previous post from other members said why the Feb update for Note is not out yet. This post make me think of Why Android update needs to go through each carriers? I understand that if someone buy a phone from Rogers, the update will go through Rogers since there are some software have been hard coded in their Rogers firmware.

So, how about many of us purchase the phone directly from Samsung? No hidden software, phones are unlocked, nothing from carriers. Why we still need to go through carriers waiting game on updates?

What about iProducts? They use carriers service too, but the update is directly from Apple and no delay. So, what is the problem with Android? Can we get update directly from Samsung if we purchase directly from Samsung?

Anyone know why?

I think this is Android problem. Even using HTC, Samsung or any other Android phones, still need to go through their carriers to update. no matter is locked or unlocked phones. I am wondering if Pixel is update directly from Google or still need to go through carriers.

It's a bit more than that though. Except for Pixel devices there are no stock Android releases. This means that technically (even if not always practically) any changes to Android, whether release or patch, may impact both the customised OS we are running *and* any carrier bloatware that gets pushed onto the devices (consequent upon the wonderful arrangement Samsung has with the carriers). Therefore, we have two stacks of testing that must happen before we get the patches. This **bleep** big time.

Technically they can separate the CSC from the OS updates. They periodically do that in Europe or with tablets. Pixels and iPhones get updates worldwide at the same time regardless of carrier and they work fine.

Technically they can. Practically they won't. Not doing so allows them to "nudge" the consumer to purchase a new device.

Hi Tallman,

Yes, whenever you insert the SIM card the device gets locked to the carrier and the security updates for the devices are rolled by the carrier. Please check with your respective carrier once to know when the update would be available for the device.

Cheers,
